Dennis & Lindsey

On Sunday, we had our very first wedding at MVBO!  Maggie & I had the privilege of make the cake and it turned out really well.  It was a design that I had never done before so I was little nervous about it turning out, but praise the Lord it did!

Birthdays

This weekend we celebrated Lilly & Dennis' birthdays.  This was the first time Maggie and I have decorated together, and it went really well!  Both cakes turned out great and were loved by the recipients!

Bridal Shower

As promised, we're going to start posting about cakes that we do individually.  I'll go ahead and start with a cake I did in May for my cousins bridal shower.  I was thrilled with how it turned out!

Graduation 2010!

Wow, has it already been a year since the last graduation?  As I (Kali) look back, I think of how time consuming and stressful that cake was.  This years was quite the opposite.  I think the most "stressful" part was trying to dye the icing burgundy.  While we were both exhausted the night we decorated, it went rather smoothly.  We put the graduates' names on the cake just like last year and added their life verse too!  This cake was yet again another success in appearance and taste!  It was also the last cake we will be doing together for a while since I have moved.  We'll continue to post on this blog when we get the chance to do cakes together, but we're also going to start posting about cakes that we do individually!

Welcome, Rachel

Little Rachel was born on April 4, 2010.  What an adorable little girl!  We were thrilled to be asked to make the babyshower cake to make this a special occasion.  Her parents didn't have a particular theme in mind so we were given free roam.  How fun!!  We chose the theme to be Butterflies with the colors Purple and Yellow.  Now the decision was whether to pipe butterflies or go for a 3D look. 3D just sounded so much more exciting!  So we chose realistic butterflies to be placed on the cake, certainly making it pop.

Now in the pictures you may notice that we spelled her name RACHAEL.  We were misinformed of the spelling, therefore spelled it incorrectly on the cake.  How embarassing!   It is actually spelled RACHEL.  Now we know! :-)  Either way, it turned out lovely and we were very thrilled at how fun a super simple cake could be.

Cupcakes!

After leaving you in suspense for such a long time, we thought it was finally time to let you know what we did for the Sweetheart Banquet.  You may have already guessed it, and if your guess was cupcakes...DING DING DING! You're right!  We decided to switch it up and found out that cupcakes were SO easy and fun!

We decided it would be fun to put filling in the cupcakes.  Unfortunately the filling for the white cupcakes was not working out and we didn't realize that until after we were done 'filling' them.  So the night before the Banquet when we were supposed to be decorating cupcakes, we had to run to the store and then start the white cupcakes all over.  Let's just say it made our night a bit longer than expected. :)

We also recently made cupcakes for our Ladies' Bible Fellowship in March. The food theme was based on the Irish flag.

Welcome, Isabella!

So the most recent project of AK Creations was a babyshower cake. Our first, to be exact! The theme of baby Isabella's room is Princess, so we had fun incorporating that into the cake. We ventured to do fondant again....not quite like we did last time. For this cake we didn't cover the entire thing with fondant, but just used it for the decorations. I have to say, it was MUCH easier.
The colors of the cake were pink and brown, so we decided to make it fun and make it pink and brown on the inside! We dyed the white cake pink and of course the brown was chocolate.
No mishaps to reveal in this project. That must mean we are improving! :-) It's amazing how much we have learned over the past year. We are coming up on our first anniversary of cake decorating. Check back for our second Sweetheart's Banquet cake. It will be unique and unlike anything we've done before!

Happy Birthday, Mrs. K!

This should have been posted last month, but here it is anyways. :)

Nicki threw her mom a surprise birthday party and asked us to do the cake.  All those invited to the party were asked to give 3 character traits that they saw in her mom, and that's what we wrote on the cake.  It was such a neat idea...and very personal too!

This was a very easy cake to do.  We tried something different that has worked really well for us.  Instead of getting together for each step of the process (and working till 2 am), we decided that it would be easier to have one person make the cake and one person make the frosting at their own convenience.  Then we would come together and assemble.  It was so EASY!   It felt like we spent hardly any time working on the cake.  In fact that's what we're doing this week for a baby shower cake we're working on.  So, be sure to check back, because if our plans go well this cake is going to be super cute!
